How Songwriter, Comedian David Barnes Uses ‘Boredom’ to Create Content

Comedian, podcast host and songwriter David Barnes joined Matthew West’s podcast to discuss the fearless nature of songwriting and comedy.

“I feel like you’ve just never been afraid to just go do something totally different,” West said of Barnes. “I remember when I first came to Nashville, and you were starting. I saw you play somewhere, and you played this song called, ‘Grace is Amazing Hands,’ and it was like, what the heck. But it takes a fearlessness to just put yourself out there. You’ve always carved this really unique independent path like as a singer and a songwriter.”

West then asked Barnes about his songwriting technique.

“It’s really more boredom,” Barnes admitted. “I can’t sit anywhere. It’s honestly why it’s so funny. As I’ve gotten older, I have so much respect for my friends like you who have a radio career because it’s like I just could never. I could just never sit anywhere long enough to do that.”

Barnes uses his social media to share his music and comedy, sometimes doing both at the same time.

In one video, Barnes plays a character named “Reggie,” who sports a mustache and a mullet while speaking in a Southern accent.

“It’s a song called ‘We Know the Way Back Home.’ Funny story we didn’t know the way back home. Years ago, I was in a traveling circus when I was 13 and 14 called the bear boy and I had a ton of hair. Y’all said you think I got a bunch of hair now this pales in comparison then,” Barnes began in the video.

He finishes the story and then shares clips of his music.

Fans commented their appreciation for his sense of humor.

“Your brain is such a hysterical masterpiece. How do you come up with this stuff,” one fan wrote.

Barnes also hosts a podcast called “Dadville.

On it, “Musicians and sometimes-comedians Dave Barnes and Jon McLaughlin in the journey of life, love and the pursuit of dad-ding on the Dadville Podcast. Get your fill of dad jokes, laughs, and heartfelt conversations while these dads and their guests talk about the journey of life and fatherhood,” a description of the podcast reads.

Movieguide® previously reported on West:

On his podcast, singer-songwriter Matthew West spoke with his friend and band member AJ Pruis about songwriting and his experience in the Christian music industry.

The two began by reminiscing about how Pruis joined West’s band at just 20 years old.

“I just remember being so impressed by you but maybe concerned about your age…but then you absolutely crushed it and have continued to impress everywhere you go with your musical skills,” West told Pruis.

Pruis moved to Nashville to pursue music, where he had the opportunity to join West. Despite his age, he made the cut and began touring with the popular Christian musician.
