How Steve Harvey Protects Himself Against AI Deep Fakes
By Movieguide® Contributor
Steve Harvey revealed he has signed a deal with AI protection agency Vermillio which scans the internet for unauthorized replications of his likeness so it can remove them.
“In today’s digital age, keeping up with the scammers using my likeness across all of the platforms is an impossible task,” Harvey said, per Variety. “My primary concern is to make sure my fans don’t fall victim to these schemes. Partnering with Vermillio gives me the tools to both protect my personal brand and more importantly, my fans while embracing the future of AI the right way — with consent and control.”
“Steve Harvey’s partnership with Vermillio reflects a powerful vision for the future of talent and AI,” added Vermillio co-founder and CEO Dan Neely, in a conversation with Variety. “With TraceID, Steve is not only protecting his own legacy but also the wellbeing of his many fans. He’s leading the way in showing how the most beloved public figures can responsibly engage with AI.”
Since the rise of AI tools ability to quickly and effectively create deep fake content, celebrities have been vocal about finding ways to protect their likeness. For some, like Scarlett Johansson, they need to protect their likeness from larger corporations who are trying to steal their voice for their own products. Meanwhile others, like Harvey, are more concerned about their fans being impacted by these replications.

While celebrities have been sounding the alarm about the harm AI replicas could wreak on society, lawmakers have been slower to take action to protect them from happening. For this reason, companies like Vermillio have needed to pop up in order to combat the evil that could occur.
“There is a 1000-foot wave coming regarding AI that several progressive countries, not including the United States, have responded to in a responsible manner,” Johansson said after a deep fake video of her was shared across social media. “It is terrifying that the U.S. government is paralyzed when it comes to passing legislation that protects all of its citizens against the imminent dangers of AI.”
Something that is perhaps as equally as concerning is how quickly AI has improved at creating these deep fakes. Last May deep fake photos of Katy Perry attending the Met Gala were shared on social media that were so convincing even her mother believed them.
