How the ‘Search Angels’ are Bringing Families Together
By Movieguide® Contributor
A Facebook group called the Search Squad has utilized social media to bring families back together that were separated through adoption.
The volunteer ran group calls themselves the ‘Search Angels’ and everything they do is free of charge. The Search Squad has helped over thousands of people to either learn more about themselves or complete their family.
The Facebook bio for the group reads, “Search Squad is a FREE locator group for adoptees, birth parents, biological family and genealogy searches. Members are screened prior to admittance. You MUST answer the screening questions or your request to join will be deleted. Please read pinned announcement once approved; there are helpful guidelines that will get your first post approved quickly if followed.”
The group’s founder, Bonnie Holley, told NBC’s Kaylee Hartung, “I had no idea when we made the group that it was going to be such a need out there.”
TODAY reported a member of the group, Kathey Williams said, “We do what we do because it’s a passion and because we love people. But we also have that side of us that we just love a good puzzle. You know, we don’t go to the store and buy crossword puzzles.”
She added, “We’re doing people puzzles.”
Nadine Cardinale is the product of one of their people puzzles. Cardinale was raised by her birth mother but has always longed to know who her birth father is.
Cardinale turned to the Search Squad for help. Within days, the Search Squad found Cardinale’s father.
“Soon as he said he wanted to meet, I think I flew down my basement stairs and told my husband: ‘Oh my God he wants to meet!’” Cardinale said to NBC News. “I was super excited.”
Cardinale’s father told Hartung about the moment he reconnected with his daughter. He said it felt like “when you go home from the hospital with a little kid in your arms and your life has changed.”
