How to Keep Communication Open with Your Teen: A Loving and Prayerful Approach

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actresses Candace Cameron Bure and Priscilla Shirer are sharing how you can keep a “line of communication” open to establish mutual trust with your teen.

“How do you keep open communication with your teens nearing adulthood when you know they’re participating in behavior you don’t agree with?” Bure read a question from a listener on her podcast.

“At this point, you have given to them everything you can give to them,” Shirer answered. “Not perfectly, but y’all were intentional and you tried. So in other words, seeds you planted are in the soil.”

“So now the responsibility is to make sure they’re clear on how you feel, to love them, so that they know that no matter what, you’re there for them so that those lines of communication stay open because they said to us, that’s the win,” the WAR ROOM actress continued. “The win is that they told you. So the fact that you know what’s going on because they told you…don’t miss the fact that that is a huge win in your relationship with your kid.”

Shirer added that it’s important to ask God to put people in your kid’s life who will be good spiritual influences who will “water that seed” you planted.

Shirer is the mom of three boys. One of the things she’s practiced with them over the years to help grow them into godly men is speaking affirmative statements over them, like:

You are a man of integrity and character. You will love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your strength. You will be a blessing to your teachers and a blessing to your friends. You are the head and not the tail. You are above and not beneath. You are a leader and not a follower.

And:

You are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
You are a man of valor.
You have the whole armour of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil.
You will bless the Lord at all times and His praises shall continually be in your mouth.

Bure is also a mom of three. Her daughter and two sons are now adults. Throughout their lives, she’s tried to lead them by example.

Bure said recently, “We’re definitely in a time of a culture war, and I think the best thing that any of us can do as parents is to be consistent and that we actually walk our walk and we show it by example and not just talk the talk.”

“The Bible tells us to ‘train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old, they won’t depart from it.’ I believe in intentional parenting,” the Teddy Bear Award® winner said. “We taught out of the Bible, and I’m grateful to see that I have adult children today who are all following that road and that path, loving the Lord.”
