How Will OpenAI’s Recent GPT Update Impact Society?

By Movieguide® Contributor

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, recently announced the next-generation version of artificial intelligence technology, GPT-4, and the update reveals the power AI could have on society.

While GPT-4 is currently available only via a waitlist, some early-access users have shared their findings about the tool’s capabilities.

CNN Business reports that GPT-4 can work with photos uploaded by users, something ChatCPT couldn’t do.

For example, GPT-4 can turn a drawing into a functional website within minutes. Another test revealed that the AI system could come up with a meal based on a picture of the interior of a refrigerator.

GPT-4 also makes coding easier and could impact the gaming industry.

“Some early GPT-4 users with very little to no prior coding knowledge have also used it to recreate iconic games such as Pong, Tetris or Snake after following step-by-step instructions provided by the tool,” CNN Business reports.

“Coding is like learning how to drive—as long as the beginner gets some guidance, anyone can code,” said Lian Jye Su, an analyst at ABI Research. “AI can be a good teacher.”

“The powerful language capabilities of GPT-4 will be used for everything from storyboarding, character creation to gaming content creation,” said Arun Chandrasekaran, an analyst at Gartner Research.

“This could give rise to more independent gaming providers in the future. But beyond the game itself, GPT-4 and similar models can be used for creating marketing content around game previews, generating news articles and even moderating gaming discussion boards.”

GPT-4 also provides more precise responses than its predecessor. While the previous version could respond in only 4,000 words, this version can give responses up to 25,000 words on topics ranging from “how to clean a piranha’s fish tank to extracting the DNA of a strawberry.”

However, while the AI tool provides some benefits, users may wonder what risks are involved.

For example, it could enable students to cheat.

OpenAI reports that GPT-4 exhibits “human-level performance” on various professional and academic tests, revealing that the updated AI system passed a simulated law school bar exam with a score around the top 10% of test takers.

As AI becomes more prevalent, users should be aware of its potential dangers.

For example, as Movieguide® previously reported, AI can be trained to be woke:

Elon Musk recently announced his plans to combat woke artificial intelligence—something he sees as a major threat to humankind.

“The danger of training AI to be woke—in other words, lie—is deadly,” Musk warned…

Musk has previously warned about the dangers of the “unrestricted development” of AI and the detrimental effects it could have on humanity.

“One of the biggest risks to the future of civilization is AI. But AI is both positive or negative—it has great promise, great capability but also, with that comes great danger,” Musk explained.
