Huge Box Office Earnings For TOP GUN: MAVERICK, ELVIS, RISE OF GRU Prove Moral Themes Draw Audiences

Many wondered if the movie industry would ever recover from the 2020 downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This summer, it became clear that movies were back and better than ever.
This summer saw some of the biggest box office earnings in years. TOP GUN: MAVERICK is the highest earner, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time with $1.3 billion globally to date.

Tom Cruise’s TOP GUN: MAVERICK continues to rise above the competition.
The Paramount and Skydance production starring Tom Cruise recently surpassed the $1 billion mark this past weekend.
The TOP GUN sequel is only the second movie released post the COVID-19-related shutdowns to surpass $1 billion. SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME made $1.9 billion. However, TOP GUN: MAVERICK earned the impressive milestone without the aid of significant markets in China and Russia, which did not play the patriotic blockbuster.
Smaller movies like ELVIS and WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING also performed higher than expected, grossing $250 million and $64.6 million, respectively.
MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU is also bringing in the big bucks, making almost $760 million worldwide so far.

During COVID-19-related theater shutdowns, families grew accustomed to an influx of streaming content, including Disney’s TURNING RED, LUCA, SOUL, and RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, to name a few.
This formula resulted in a failure at the box office for most animated movies, as studios fear that their movie will attract families. Additionally, each of those movies contained major cautions that made families wary of watching together.
However, MINIONS: RISE OF GRU rose to the occasion and proved that audiences’ interest in animated movies is back; so long as they do not push an immoral agenda.
Illumination, the studio behind the DESPICABLE ME and MINION franchise, broke records over Independence Day weekend, earning $125 million.
MINIONS: RISE OF GRU is an impressive box office performance for all genres, as it overtook TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON for the highest-grossing movie over the fourth of July.
While projections put RISE OF GRU at $65 million for the weekend, families came in droves to experience funny, slapstick humor.
With huge box office numbers like these, it’s clear that movies with moral, patriotic, and family-friendly themes will continue to draw crowds to the theaters!
