How Humor Played an Important Role in Dolly Parton’s 58-Year Marriage

Three months before the death of her husband Carl Dean, Dolly Parton explained how humor was integral to their long lasting marriage.
“He’s quiet and I’m loud, and we’re funny,” Parton said in December while on Bunny Xo’s podcast “Dumb Blonde,” per PEOPLE. “Oh, he’s hilarious. And I think one of the things that’s made [our marriage] last so long through the years is that we love each other [and] we respect each other, but we have a lot of fun.”
“Anytime [there’s] too much tension going on, either one of use can like, find a joke about it to really break the tension, where we don’t let it go so far. We never fought back and forth,” Parton continued. “And I’m glad that we never did, because once you start that, that becomes a lifetime thing. I’ve seen it with so many people, and I thought, ‘I ain’t ever starting that.’”
On March 3, Parton announced that Dean had died. The couple had been married for 58 years after meeting outside of a laundromat less than 24 hours after she had moved to Nashville.

Parton attributes much of her success to his support, even though she never imagined she would get married. The fact that he never wanted the spotlight was crucial as it allowed her to shine without him getting jealous of her success. However, even though they were often apart because of her work, they always cherished the time they had together.
“On my last perfect day, well, I had a day off and I get to spend that whole day with my husband,” Parton told PEOPLE in December. “I’ve worked so much that we don’t often have all the long, full days that we used to have when life was not as complicated. Anytime I have some time off, that’s always a good day for me and for him, for us to have time off.”
