I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 to Begin Production This Spring
By Movieguide® Contributor
Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company just announced that I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 will officially begin production in spring 2025.
The movie is “directed by Brent McCorkle and Andrew Erwin based of a screenplay written by McCorkle,” Crosswalk reported. “I CAN ONLY IMAGINE is one of the most successful faith-based movies of all time and tells the true-life story of Bart Millard, the lead singer of MercyMe and the inspiration behind the band’s chart-topping song of the same name.”
McCorkle co-directed JESUS REVOLUTION. Andy and Jon Erwin directed I CAN ONLY IMAGINE, and McCorkle and Jon wrote the screenplay.
The first movie shares part of Millard’s life story — his relationship with his abusive father and their reconciliation. Millard recently revealed that I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 is about the story behind his song, “Even If.” The song stems from his unanswered prayers and ordeal with his son, who battled a chronic illness.
“The sequel will include many of the cast from the first film. John Michael Finley will return as Millard, and Dennis Quaid as his father,” Crosswalk reported. “Trace Adkins will once again portray Scott Brickell, MercyMe’s manager. In a new role, Milo Ventimiglia will play singer/songwriter Tim Timmons.”

“The Bible said that they overcame the enemy by the blood of the lamb and the power of their testimony,” Andy said, referencing Revelation 12:11. “And there’s something really powerful about your personal story. And that’s why we tell the stories we do and we’re privileged to get to do that each and every day to do stories that matter.”
I CAN ONLY IMAGINE won Movieguide®’s 2018 Epiphany Prize and was in Movieguide®’s Ten Best 2018 Movies for Families list.
“I CAN ONLY IMAGINE captured the hearts of audiences when it was released and continues to provide hope and encouragement to millions around the globe,” said Kevin Downes, film producer and executive at Kingdom Story Company.
Collider reported, “Back in 2018, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE was a surprise hit at the U.S. box office. It debuted at #3 and put up a fight against titles like Steven Spielberg’s READY PLAYER ONE and Marvel Studios’ mega-blockbuster BLACK PANTHER. By the end of its run, it was able to outperform titles like PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING and TOMB RAIDER (depending on the week). The movie ended its box office run with $83 million against a minuscule budget of $7 million — meaning that the title was able to gross twelve times its cost.”
Hopefully, the sequel will have as much impact and success!
