IF Crosses $160 Million at Global Box Office
By Movieguide® Contributor
IF just reached a major box office milestone, crossing $160 million at the global box office.
“IF has reached $160.7 million globally in its fourth weekend,” Screen Rant reported. “In terms of international performance, the movie grossed $6.2 million, making its foreign box office $67.2 million.”
The movie will premiere in China and Japan later this month, which has the potential to push IF to $200 million at the global box office.
IF, directed and written by THE OFFICE star John Krasinski, tells the story of “a young girl who goes through a difficult experience [and] begins to see everyone’s imaginary friends who have been left behind as their real-life friends have grown up,” per IMDb.
A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:
IF is beautifully shot and performed. It also has some fun adventures and humorous situations, with lots of creativity. However, what’s most surprising about the movie are its heartfelt dramatic moments, which are emotionally powerful. IF is a celebration of imagination, creativity, love, and family. The movie promotes the idea that adults should maintain a youthful attitude and not abandon the imagination and love they had as children. IF is relatively family friendly. However, it’s marred by some meandering moments, four light obscenities and 15 light profanities. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older pre-teen children.
Krasinski told The Hollywood Reporter that he drew inspiration for the movie from his own children, daughters Hazel, 10, and Violet, 7, whom he shares with wife Emily Blunt.
“I pitched them the idea of the script, I showed them all the drawings I did while I was writing the script — I’m a terrible artist, so I had to walk them through that,” he shared. “They told me what was cute about certain IFs, what wasn’t cute, what they wanted to change.”
Krasinski also revealed that his daughters’ own imaginary friends made the movie.
“Ally the pink alligator is one of my daughter’s and the other one is the flaming marshmallow, so it’s a family affair,” he said. “And my wife’s the unicorn so come on, we’re all involved.”
Movieguide® previously reported on IF’s box office success:
John Krasinski’s new family movie, IF, made its debut last weekend and secured a total of $35 million at the box office.
“Families came out in force and they loved the film,” said Chris Aronson, head of Paramount’s domestic distribution.
“I think it bodes well for moviegoing in general as we move into the summer movie season,” he expressed. “Kids are out of school starting this coming week and I couldn’t think of a better film to be in the marketplace than this one: It’s new, it’s fresh, it’s original, and it’s such a heartwarming film.”
