If You Want to Learn a Trade Skill, Mike Rowe Can Help
By Movieguide® Contributor
DIRTY JOBS star Mike Rowe has plenty of scholarships for anyone interested in learning a trade skill.
“So I interviewed this economist the other day,” Rowe began in a Facebook video on Monday, “brilliant writer named Nick Eberstadt who wrote a great book called Men Without Work, in which he argues and proves that 7.2 million able-bodied American men are currently not only not working but not even looking for work. They’re out, in other words.”
“Over three times the share of men out of work and out of the labor force can be seen today in America as back in the sixties. In practical terms, this means that the work rate for modern American men is at Great Depression levels,” Eberstadt explained in a December interview.

“Meanwhile, we have 7.6 million open jobs according to the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics), two-thirds of which don’t require a four-year degree and many of which offer a six-figure salary,” Rowe said. “Now in a perfect world, we’d connect those 7.2 million men currently sitting on their a** with these 7.6 million open positions, but the world isn’t perfect.”
But Rowe has a solution to help connect the dots.
“So what we do at mikeroweWORKS instead is offer work ethic scholarships to men and women who wanna work,” he explained. “Specifically, men and women who want to learn a skill that’s in demand if that sounds like you, we’ve got $2.5 million dollars burning a hole in our metaphorical pocket over at mikeroweworks.org/scholarship. Go get some!”
