INSIDE OUT 2 Director Shares ‘Overwhelming’ Experience Making Movie

By Movieguide® Contributor

INSIDE OUT 2’s director says the success of the movie has been “amazing” and “overwhelming.”

In an interview with Deadline, Kelsey Mann said, “I just wanted to make a good movie that was a follow-up to the first film, which is so beloved…I just wanted to do it justice.”

“I hoped it would do well, but the fact that it’s been so embraced by the entire world is overwhelming,” he added. “It’s been amazing.”

INSIDE OUT 2 was Mann’s feature film debut as a director, but he had been working at Pixar for a decade before he got the chance of a lifetime.

“It took me a long time just to get a job there,” he said of the studio. “It took me ten years to finally get a job there as a story artist, and I thought, ‘Finally! I did it! I’m going to retire a Pixar story artist’ [and] I’d be so happy.”

Mann admitted he never expected to get offered a directorial job.

“[The movie] was almost my own battle between my utter joy of getting this opportunity and also the overwhelming anxiety I feel for not only directing a Pixar film but also a follow-up to a movie that everyone really loves,” Mann explained.

Mann has previously spoken about the process behind putting INSIDE OUT 2 together, from the extensive research he did surrounding teenagers’ feelings, to thinking about what families want to see at the theater.

“We want to make a movie that the whole family can enjoy, regardless of your age,” he told Variety. “We all tried to dig into our own experiences.”

The director also shared with IndieWire that there was a lot of trial and error during the process.

“You just workshop the movie over and over,” Mann explained. “There are movies I love that I never want to see again. Those are great, but they aren’t my favorite movies, and they’re not the ones that made me want to be in this industry. I wanted to make a movie that everybody would want to go see, and that you would want to see again.”
