Is ChatGPT Use Becoming More Common Among School Kids?

A new poll from Pew revealed that the number of school kids using ChatGPT to complete their schoolwork has doubled in the past two years.

“The share of teens who say they use ChatGPT for their schoolwork has risen to 26%, according to a Pew Research Center survey of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17. That’s up from 13% in 2023,” Pew reported. “Still, most teens (73%) have not used the chatbot in this way.”

While more teens than ever are leaning on ChatGPT for their work, there is a general consensus on what the tool is and is not acceptable to be used for. Fifty-four percent of teens believe the tool is acceptable “to research new topics,” while 29% argue it is not acceptable to use the chatbot “to solve math problems” and 42% disapprove of using the tool “to write essays.” These beliefs largely come from an understanding of what does and does not count as plagiarism.

“We need to say, full stop, that any attempt to pass off work of someone or something else’s as your own is deceptive,” said Jason Thacker, a professor of philosophy and ethics at Boyce College in Louisville, Kentucky.

However, for some students, it is difficult to do what they know is right, when using ChatGPT can significantly improve their grades with low chances of them getting caught. A study performed last July discovered that AI scores half a letter grade to a full letter grade better on tests than human students with 94% of AI answers going undetected by teachers.

While many teachers are returning to in-class, paper tests and hand-written essays, these solutions do not address concerns over cheating on homework. At the end of the day, it is often the student’s responsibility to value their learning, rather than outsourcing it to AI.
