James Corden Reflects on Leaving Late Night Television To Spend Time With Family

By Movieguide® Contributor

James Corden recently opened up about his decision to leave THE LATE LATE SHOW and why his family played a big role in that choice.

Corden announced he would be leaving the late night show last year. His final episodes will air this spring.

“Look it’s not easy in any way to walk away from something that is so… I mean I’ll never work in a better environment than the one I work in now,” he shared. “Nothing about leaving the show was to do with not enjoying it. I love it, but the truth is it became a very easy decision because I always knew it was an adventure and I never ever considered it to be the final destination.”

His decision to leave the show was based around a desire to spend more time with his children, Max, 11, Carey, 8, and Charlotte, 5.

Corden shared a story about his son’s disappointment when the star had to head to work on a Sunday instead of sticking around to hang out.

“I got in the car and I called my wife Jules and I said, ‘I’ve realized, best-case scenario we have six more summers where Max is like, even remotely wants to be around us and I cannot waste another one,'” Corden recalled.

“That is really all it comes down to,” the late night host emphasized. “I will be a mess on that last show, I will cry my eyes out. But I will know in my core that the best thing for me and the best thing for us as a family is to put down some roots in London, and it feels absolutely right in every single way.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Corden’s decision to leave THE LATE LATE SHOW:

Actor and late-night host James Corden recently announced that he would be step down as host of THE LATE LATE SHOW, and revealed that his commitment to his family factored into the decision.

Corden took over THE LATE LATE SHOW in 2015 and won praise for his “Carpool Karaoke” segments and wholesome and uplifting interviews. Fans of the show were sad to hear of Corden’s exit, but Corden shared that his family comes first.

The INTO THE WOODS star shares Charlotte, 4, Carey, 7, and Max, 11, with his wife, Julia Carey.

“My kids are getting older, their grandparents are getting older, and it perhaps just felt like the right time for us as a family to be freer in our decisions,” the actor explained of his decision to step down.

Corden has previously spoken about being a father, calling it “an amazing thing.”

“There’s two things that happen when you have a child,” the late night show host shared. “One is you don’t really realize the depth of love that you could feel for someone you’ve just met. And you also realize the indifference of your friends who don’t have kids. And that is a massive thing.”

He continued, “You also realize your own indifference to other people’s kids before you had kids. So when people used to show me photos of their kid, I’d be like, ‘Yeah, dude, it’s a kid. I get it. Well done. Loads of people have got them.’ Now, I’m like, ‘Aw.’”
