James Gunn Reveals SUPERMAN Suit Ahead of Next Year’s Movie Release

Director and writer James Gunn just shared a glimpse of Superman’s costume from the new SUPERMAN movie.
“As filming on James Gunn’s SUPERMAN (formerly SUPERMAN: LEGACY) continues, the writer-director shared to his Threads account a first look at star David Corenswet in costume as the Man of Steel,” Variety reported May 6. “The first thing fans might notice is the suit is quite dirty and weathered, which suggests Superman will be doing plenty of down and dirty fighting in the movie.”
Gunn said the photo “was taken on set by Jess Miglio and was entirely in-camera.”
In the photo’s background, there’s a giant orb with a purple ray shooting out of it. ScreenRant posited that it could be from an alien enemy or comic villains Brainiac or The Engineer. Others have guessed it might be another comic villain, Solaris, given the eye shape of the orb. However, purple is a typical Lex Luthor color in the comics.
The suit looks similar to other Superman suits from the past, with its red cape and red trunks over a blue suit. It’s worn by David Corenswet, who will play the role of Superman—his first-ever lead.
“The 30-year-old actor is best known for his supporting roles in two Ryan Murphy-created Netflix series, THE POLITICIAN and HOLLYWOOD. His most notable film role prior to SUPERMAN was probably PEARL, the Ti West-directed horror movie starring Mia Goth,” Variety reported.
Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult will play villain Lex Luthor. Other characters are played by Sky Gisondo, Anthony Carrigan, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner) and Isabela Merced.
Movieguide® reported on March 19:
While Gunn is keeping specifics about the movie under wraps, he shared that it will differ from the superhero’s traditional story. Rather than rehashing old plots, Warner Bros. has called the movie a “workplace origin story.”
This step in a new direction mirrors the plan for the DC universe, as SUPERMAN will kick off a new era for DC. Rather than building off previous movies, the Gunn-led universe will stand alone from other DC storylines. DC will also continue to produce movies outside of Gunn’s canon, such as THE BATMAN II, a sequel to the 2022 Oscar nominee.
Brosnahan said the table read “was pretty amazing. Some of us met for the first time. Some of us got to see each other again. It was amazing to hear the script out loud.”
She’s a fan of Lois Lane because “she’s smart, ambitious and can be funny. She knows she’s the smartest person in the room more often than not.”
The movie is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
