Jay Leno Remains Positive Despite Multiple Health Setbacks

By Movieguide® Contributor

In recent years Jay Leno has suffered from two harrowing facial injuries and his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s but he remains adamant that there is a lot of good in his life.

In November of 2022, Jay Leno experienced third-degree burns during a gas explosion that occurred while he was working on one of his cars. The injury required two skin grafts on his face and a reconstruction of his ear. Only two months later, the former talk show host broke his leg and reinjured his face during a nasty motorcycle incident. Despite this string of bad luck, Leno remains optimistic about life.

“I had to call my face guy and go, ‘Listen, remember that new face you gave me? You got another face there? I need another one,’” Leno joked. “‘All right, come on,’ and he went and gave me another face,” adding, “You can’t see the zipper, right?”

“Look, I’ve been extremely lucky in my life, you know, and even though the accidents weren’t fun, I was still pretty lucky. I didn’t lose an eye, I’m not horribly disfigured … well, just regular disfigured,” Leno told Fox News Digital. “I’ve got a lot to be grateful for.”

Even after two back-to-back accidents, Leno remains in love with cars and motorcycles and plans to continue working with them for as long as he can. As for his wife, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s earlier this year, Leno continues to feel lucky to have her in his life.

“It’s OK. You know, it’s life. Everybody goes through it,” Leno said of his wife’s condition. “I’ve been very lucky in my life. I don’t complain about everything. We have a lot of fun, and I cook dinner for her every night.”

“She’s good. She’s good, you know?” he added. “It’s changes you have to make, but that’s OK. That’s OK”.

Jay Leno says relying on faith and family makes the hard times “easier” to handle.

“All of that,” Leno said when asked if his faith and family have been something he leans on during life’s difficulties. “Exactly. It’s the whole thing. We’ve been married 44 years. It gets easier. It doesn’t get harder.”

Leno and his wife Mavis have recently been navigating her advanced dementia diagnosis, which was revealed earlier this year. Leno was granted an estate conservatorship to handle her estate and financial dealings.
