Jelly Roll explained how his daughter’s mom’s addiction has impacted her, especially after a recent drug-related arrest made its way into the news cycle.
“My child’s mother has struggled with drug addiction since my daughter’s been born, pretty much,” Jelly Roll told “The Pivot” podcast, per Fox News, while discussing a recent drug-related arrest that made news headlines. “The addict is not the victim in that situation. The family is.
“I’ve seen the effect that it’s had on her. I’ve got a 16, almost 17-year-old upstairs, and I’ve seen the effect that it’s had. Like, it’s really hurt her too. It’s truly affected her life…” Jelly Roll continued. “This is a 16, 17-year-old that knows her mother is a drug addict, but like, her having to see the mugshot of her mother with just meth ate up on her face…I watched her go through it all over again.”
The pain of of his daughter seeing just how messed up her mother is was devastating for Jelly Roll. However, although he does not support his exes drug habit, he is understanding, having been an addict himself for decades.
“I had to learn that you could drink alcohol without doing cocaine,” the singer told PEOPLE in late 2023. “I’ve never said that, but that’s real. There was a long time where I just assumed. When people told me they drank without doing cocaine, I was like, I thought we only drank to do cocaine.”
“I’ve made a lot of peace with my past,” Jelly Roll added. “I mean, it still haunts me like the ghosts I know, but I tell you what, I don’t think about doing no drugs today. As far as today goes, I don’t know about tomorrow, but I can tell you, today, right now, I’m happy.”
In fact, a large reason why the singer turned his life around was because of his daughter. He was in jail when she was born and swore that he would clean up his act so he could take care of her. Since then, he has never looked back as he has worked to provide the life for her he dreamed of.
“[i was] sitting in a jail cell, having $17 of Honey Buns and potato chips to my name – I owned one outfit, the one that was in the jail – and here I was, responsible for a child,” Jelly Roll told PEOPLE. “I mean, I was the lowest common denominator in life. You know, I was scum of the earth. I was a crack dealer. I was a horrible, horrible human. And I was like, ‘I gotta figure this out.’”
Even as he has found fame and success, Jelly Roll has remained rooted in his family and is keeping them a priority even as his career continues to reach new heights.
