Jessica Simpson 7 Years Sober: Finding Clarity and Embracing Creativity
By Movieguide® Contributor
Jessica Simpson is reflecting how sobriety changed her life for the better.
“7yrs ago today I walked myself into the light of being alcohol free,” she wrote on Instagram in November.
“Around 2016, ’17, I was writing out here in Los Angeles with some of the biggest hitmakers. I have songs from those times that I never released because they just didn’t feel like me,” she said recently. “Every time I would write, I was a little afraid of myself. It was almost too much, especially because I was drinking at the time.”
“But once I gave up the alcohol, the fears just diminished. They went away. And it was so much easier for me to access myself artistically,” she continued. “I overthought it when I drank.”
She said her record wasn’t about making something popular or successful.
“It was just about having a vibe,” she said. “There’s really not a lot of that in Los Angeles right now. It’s formulaic. I wanted to break that mold for myself personally.”
“I don’t care if anything’s a hit,” she said. “I’m not with a record label. I don’t expect it to even be on the radio.”
In 2023, Simpson said her sobriety is one of the best choices she’s ever made.
“Not drinking has been the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. I have so much clarity,” she said.

“I like to be present when I’m in conversation with people. I like to absorb what other people are thinking, and I like to listen. That kind of blocked me from feeling my life,” she continued. “I’m feeling it now, and I love it.”
She added, “It’s also good to keep the extra pounds off, I will say, especially during the holidays.”
It’s clear that Simpson is proud of her sobriety journey and is pleased with how it’s transformed her in her personal life and career.
In 2021, Simpson shared a photo of herself with the caption, “This person in the early morning of Nov 1, 2017 is an unrecognizable version of myself. I had so much self-discovery to unlock and explore. I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self-respect, and brave this world with piercing clarity.”
“Personally, to do this I needed to stop drinking alcohol because it kept my mind and heart circling in the same direction and quite honestly I was exhausted. I wanted to feel the pain so I could carry it like a badge of honor,” she explained. “I wanted to live as a leader does and break cycles to advance forward- never looking back with regret and remorse over any choice I have made and would make for the rest of my time here within this beautiful world.”
Last year, she shared a photo celebrating her son, Ace’s 11th birthday. Someone commented, “STOP DRINKING!” to which she replied, “I haven’t wanted or touched alcohol since October 2017 and it has been the best decision I’ve made for myself and for my family. Thank you for your concern, but you have me very misunderstood. Sending love your way.”
