Jim Carrey Returns for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3

Despite an ambiguous end for his character in the finale of the second movie, Jim Carrey and his villainous character, Dr. Robotnik, will return for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3.
This announcement, per Variety, is largely a shock as the actor announced after the second movie that he was retiring from acting.
“Well, I’m retiring,” Carrey said last April. “Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
“I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas,” he added. “I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
The script for the third SONIC movie, however, appears to have convinced him to return – confirmed by the movie’s first promotion posted across social media, which includes his character’s unmistakable laugh.
Whether Dr. Robotnik will be featured as the primary villain remains a mystery, as the third movie introduces Sonic’s evil doppelganger Shadow to the franchise.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG and SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 were box office successes, grossing a combined $870.8 million at the global box office. The movies featured wholesome, family-friendly storylines and were nominated for Movieguide® Awards.
Along with the third movie, Paramount is also producing a KNUCKLES spinoff show for Paramount+.
Jeff Fowler returns to direct the third movie. SONIC 3 will be produced by Neal H. Moritz, Tony Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 is slated to hit theaters on Dec. 20, 2024.
