Joe Rogan’s $250 Million Podcast No Longer Exclusive to Spotify

By Movieguide® Contributor

Renowned podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience” (JRE) is no longer exclusive to Spotify as the company explores new avenues for listenership.

“Spotify inked a new multiyear partnership deal for controversial podcast ‘The Joe Rogan Experience,’ which is said to be worth up to $250 million. Under the new pact, Rogan’s popular show — which has been exclusively available on Spotify for three years — will now be available on other audio platforms,” Variety reported.

“In addition to continued availability on Spotify, Rogan’s show will soon be available on additional services, including Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and YouTube,” Variety continued. “The move comes under Spotify’s revised strategy to give up exclusive streaming rights in favor of broader distribution, which the company kicked off in 2023.”

Rogan’s team and Spotify will collaborate to grow the show across all platforms. Rogan will profit from a guaranteed fee from Spotify as well as ad revenue.

Rogan’s podcast’s worth is up $50 million from a few years ago. Movieguide® reported in February 2022:

In 2020, Spotify signed a deal with Joe Rogan and became the exclusive distributor of his top-rated podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience.”

After controversy arose over Rogan’s alleged promotion of “misinformation” through his conversations with various guests, The New York Times reported that the three-and-a-half year deal is worth at least $200 million.

The NYT reported: …Even in the frothy podcast market, the deal for “The Joe Rogan Experience” was extraordinary. Spotify had purchased entire content companies, Gimlet Media and The Ringer, for slightly less than $200 million each, according to company filings.

In the past few years, the show received a lot of flak for controversial comments from its host, particularly concerning racism.

U.S. News reported, “In February 2022, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek denounced the host’s racist language but said, ‘I do not believe that silencing Joe is the answer.’”

So, the podcast remained on the platform, but Spotify did make some changes.

Movieguide® reported:

After backlash from people who called on Spotify to pull Joe Rogan and his podcast, THE JOE ROGAN EXPERIENCE, from their platform, the company announced a new safety advisory council….

“While Spotify has been seekinging feedback from many of these founding members for years, we’re excited to further expand and be more transparent about our safety partnerships,” the company wrote. “In the months ahead, we will work closely with founding members to expand the council, with the goal of broadening regional and linguistic representation as well as adding additional experts in the equity and impact space.”

Despite the podcast’s questionable history and in light of the new deal, it’s clear that Rogan’s podcast isn’t going anywhere.

Spotify confirmed on Friday: “JRE remains podcasting’s king, consistently ranking as the most-listened-to podcast globally and our users have ranked the show as Spotify’s Wrapped top podcast each year since 2020.”
