Joel Smallbone Says UNSUNG HERO Will Celebrate ‘Motherhood and Family’

By Movieguide® Staff

For KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone reflected on family and his upcoming movie UNSUNG HERO on the Movieguide® Awards red carpet.

“I think the greatest way we can relate to each other is by telling our story. And this case, Mom and Dad’s migration story from Australia to the United States and all the tragedies and triumphs that we faced,” Smallbone said of the movie.

While the story is about the Smallbone family, he explained that anyone can relate to their experiences.

“It is titled UNSUNG HERO, and I think, depending on the viewer and the stage of life, you see yourself in the story,” he added. “If you’re an 18-year-old girl, Rebecca, my sister, becomes sort of your unsung hero. And if you’re a mom and a wife, then my mom Helen is just such a great figure in real life and in the picture. And if you’re a husband or a father, and you’re trying to navigate your way through…wanting to protect and wanting to lift up your wife and your family, then you relate to David’s character.”

“Dramatic and uplifting and really celebrating motherhood and family, which is a I think important narrative for us to celebrate in 2024,” he summarized.

Smallbone and his wife Moriah’s first movie together, JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM, was nominated for Movieguide®’s Epiphany Prize® for Most Inspiring Movie and Best Movie for Families.

“We both love the medium of sharing stories through music and spiritual stories through music and sharing stories through movies,” he said.

See the Smallbones on the Movieguide® Awards Broadcast on GAF on March 7 at 8 p.m. ET.
