Why Skillet’s John Cooper Stands for Truth: ‘Help People Through Darkness’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Skillet frontman John Cooper joined Shannon Bream’s “Livin’ The Bream Podcast” to explain why he’s decided to stand up for Christian values in America.
Cooper’s new book, “Wimpy, Weak, & Woke: How Truth Can Save America From Utopian Destruction,” dives into “the increasing conflicts in America today are often referred to as ‘culture war.’ But what is truly happening is a war between gods – the living God and the god of Man.”
When asked why he decided to write the book, the singer explained, “We are known as the hopeful band, the God is there for you band, never give up. We don’t want to create division. Skillet wants to create unity. We are the nice people. We are the accepting people. A few years ago, I started getting very vocal about what some people call ‘culture war issues.’ And now there is a lot of people saying, ‘John, I’m mad at you. You used to be the unity guy, the nice guy, the hopeful guy.’ Now you are saying these very divisive angsty things.”
“What they don’t understand and what I keep explaining is, I write songs, and I want to help people through chaos,” he continued. “I want to help people through darkness. And what they don’t understand is that people in America have never experienced the kind of chaos that we are experiencing right now.”
Cooper realized the Christian values foundational to America are being slowly replaced.
“If there’s anything that’s clear to me, there is a revolution to tear down American society, the entire structures of this system. But it’s not really about tearing down America, it’s about tearing down the underpinnings of what built America, Christian civilization,” he told The Christian Post. “There is a revolution to tear down Christianity, the reflection of Christ in any of our cultures, our traditions, our sexual mores, our theology, our culture. Our everything!”
In the book, he dives into how secular utopia versus pursuing God’s kingdom will impact America’s future.
“It’s going to be a pluralistic society of tolerance: utopia. And, of course, that always ends up in dystopia where you kill millions of people,” Cooper explained the two different paths. “The other divergent side is going to be the principles of the Kingdom of God. How we thrive, how we flourish. So that’s what the book is about.”
“A side message of that is written to the Church because I think that what we’re seeing now is a lot of these secular utopian ideas are seeping into the Christian Church, into Christian theology. And I think we have a lot of church leaders, who I believe are men of utopia disguised as men of the Kingdom,” he added.

Skillet frontman John Cooper urged fans to turn to God as American culture has lost its “moral framework.”
“I just wanted to send you a message to say this. Have you already been hit with how crazy and the stupidity of our culture? It’s absolutely insane,” Cooper said in an Instagram video. “My guess is it’s already hit you via email or your news feed or your social media. I’m already hit with how stupid our world is. We have a real problem.”
“It is not something that politics can fix,” he added. “No politician can fix this. They cannot fix what’s going on.”
“We have a deep spiritual problem in this country. Honestly, ask yourself this question. How else can you explain the insanity of the day? We turn our backs on God. We turn our backs on the entire Creator. All of the things that built this country, that taught us prosperity, that taught us how to live. We completely obliterated all of it,” the singer continued.
“What we are in desperate need of is going back to a moral framework. It is the moral framework of the Bible is what built this country. Over the next few weeks, maybe month, I’ll be sharing a ton of videos like this. No politician can fix it, but turning to God can,” Cooper added.
