Comedian Shares How Fatherhood Changed His Outlook on Sobriety

By Movieguide® Contributor

It’s been four years since comedian John Mulaney set aside his drug addiction, and he says it’s a choice he acknowledges every day.

“I don’t think about cocaine, opioids, and benzodiazeprine every day. I’ll acknowledge that I understand the vigilance I need. I do not think about it every day. I just don’t,” he told CBS News. “I do think about the ways that I can lead my life to perhaps never feel the kind of strain that got me there. So, yeah, sobriety maybe being, like, a bigger term than just abstaining from the chemicals, I definitely think about it every day.”

Now that he is a husband and father, he realizes the responsibility that rests on him.

“I’m in the world now that I’m a father,” he explained. “My head was my only home before that. When my son was born, the first thought I had was, I went, ‘Oh, there you are.’ And when my daughter was born, I had this — not to sound ‘woo-woo’ or anything — but when she was born, I went, ‘Oh!’ My thought was like, ‘Oh, we’ve met before. I’ve collided with you some other time.’ So, it’s like these people came in that just, I don’t know, make me like the world a lot more.”

Last year, Mulaney welcomed his daughter Méi with wife Olivia Munn.

“Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon🐉… I love my little girl so much,” he wrote on Instagram along with a photo of him, Olivia and Méi in the hospital. “Méi (pronounced may) means plum in Chinese 梅💜”

Fans commented with congratulations. “😭😭😭your family is beautiful, John Mulaney,” one user said. Another person joked, “Congrats! Olivia looks so good it looks like John had the baby.”

He spoke about getting sober in the past and why he wants to maintain his sobriety.

“I have, for some reason, set up various obstacles, in my own way, that have left me sometimes pretty rawed up, pretty disoriented and pretty unhappy, but I am at my core a happy person,” Mulaney said while appearing on THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT. “And it’s OK for me to protect that by living the life I want to live. I am very lucky. I have a very good life, and I don’t want to be the reason that that gets complicated.”
