Jonathan Roumie Dishes On How He Really Feels About Playing Jesus

By Movieguide® Contributor

THE CHOSEN actor Jonathan Roumie is talking about what it’s really like to play Jesus.

“I need to rely on people to remind me of the last several years because they’ve been so insane,” Roumie said on the “Pints with Aquinas” podcast. “It’s been so overwhelming at times, and I’ve met so many people, and I’ve shown up so many places, and I kind of have relegated a lot of the experiences.”

The actor explained that when he meets fans who share the impact he has made on their life, he sometimes retracts.

“If I show up at a conference and then I have met a bunch of people that pour their heart out to me and tell me, like, what’s been going on in their lives and how my work has affected them, it just sort of puts me into a different mode where all of a sudden I think my brain has to just shut down or just kind of portion away moments,” he said.

Roumie never thought he would turn into a big celebrity, but the moment he knew the show made it was when he met Pope Francis in 2021.

“The show had been popular like started to get globally popular for about a year,” Roumie explained. “During the pandemic, we released the show for free as a sort of a gesture to kind of commit to peace and comfort and reducing the anxiety that everyone was feeling. So, we just kind of gave the show away and the show blew up after we gave it away for free.”

THE CHOSEN is now filming Season 5.

Movieguide® reported:

Filming for THE CHOSEN Season 5 has moved back to Texas after spending the first few months of production in Utah, and they just dropped a peek at their new sets.

The “brand new sets in our not one but two incredible sound stages” are the perfect home for the cast and crew as they wrap filming for the next season.

“It’s just surreal seeing how far we’ve come from Season 1 to now,” Jordan Walker Ross (Little James) said of the new sets. “There’s always something new that we can look forward to every every time we come back.”

THE CHOSEN’s social media personalities described how the set changed since the last time filming occurred in Texas.

“THE CHOSEN’s fifth season will be unique to any other,” Collider reported. “It takes place over the course of just one week, Holy Week, picking up where season 4 left off as Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey right before his crucifixion.”

While THE CHOSEN’s reach continues to grow, director Dallas Jenkins’ focus is the same.

“Whether a hundred people are watching or a million people watching or a hundred million people are watching or whether we have a low budget or a bigger budget, ultimately, we’re just trying to tell the truth about what happened 2,000 years ago and introduce people to an authentic Jesus,” he said earlier this year.

A release date for Season 5 has not been announced yet.
