Julia Roberts Talks Family’s ‘Simple’ Smartphone Rules

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actress Julia Roberts is one of the many parents restricting their children’s access to smartphones.

“For us, we just had sort of simple rules where we had a charging station, where everybody’s phone goes when you get home,” Roberts shared. “There’s no phones at the table, certainly.”

She and husband Danny Moder share twins Hazel and Finn, 19, and Henry, 16.

“I parent them the same way out of the house that I parented them in the house, which is, you know, ‘Are you getting enough sleep?’ And ‘You sound like you’re sick.’ And ‘Are you drinking tea?’ And ‘Text me when you get home you get home [so] I can see that you’re home safe and sound,” Roberts said of parenting teenagers.

She continued, “And I have an immense amount of appreciation for both of my older kids because they still allow me to be the same mom to them and it’s not eye-rolling and there’s a huge amount of understanding.”

The actress recently celebrated Hazel and Finn’s 19th birthday with a sweet Instagram post.

“There are no words for the joy, the fun, the wild rumpus of life together,” Roberts captioned a photo of herself and the twins.

Roberts has previously spoken about her commitment to keeping her kids away from social media.

“I try to keep them off social media because I don’t really understand what they need that for right now,” she explained. “I have three young children so I’m very careful about turning the TV on. It’s interesting trying to raise kids in this day because it’s all so new — the pressures, the resources, having the world in your hand like that.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Roberts’ dedication to her family:

Actress Julia Roberts was once known as the queen of romcoms in Hollywood, with roles in blockbusters like NOTTING HILL, PRETTY WOMAN, and MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING. However, Roberts decided to take a step back from Hollywood for a heartwarming reason.

“Here’s the thing: If I’d thought something was good enough, I would have done it,” Roberts shared. “But I also had three kids in the last 18 years.”

“That raises the bar even more because then it’s not only ‘Is this material good?’ It’s also the math equation of my husband’s work schedule and the kids’ school schedule and summer vacation,” the actress explained. “It’s not just, ‘Oh, I think I want to do this.’ I have a sense of great pride in being home with my family and considering myself a homemaker.”
