Julie Andrews Reveals Future of Third PRINCESS DIARIES Movie

Julie Andrews Reveals Future of Third PRINCESS DIARIES Movie

By Movieguide® Contributor

Fans of the PRINCESS DIARIES franchise have been clamoring for a third movie for nearly 20 years; Julie Andrews recently shared her take on whether a return to that story will ever happen.

“Ah, I’ve been asked that so many times,” Andrews told TODAY.com. “There was dialogue about it [but] nothing had been realized. And I may be wrong, but I think it’s been shelved now. I can’t be sure.”

“I’m sure there will be another version on another day,” she added, noting that it may be a good thing the series ended at two. “It’s quite a long time now since the two DIARIES were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, ‘til it’s dead.”

“I’d be very happy if we did do another one,” Andrews continued. “But I don’t expect to.”

Anne Hathaway, Andrews’ costar in the movies, previously expressed similar interest in returning to the world of the DIARIES, revealing in 2019 that things got serious as a script for the trilogy emerged.

“There is a script for the third movie. There is a script,” Hathaway told Andy Cohen at the time. “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”

“It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it,” Hathaway continued. “It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

While a third movie is unlikely, Movieguide® praised the first two PRINCESS DIARIES movies, both of which earned a +3 content score.

The likelihood of a third installment to the series is also bogged down by the passing of director Garry Marshall in 2016. He helmed the previous movies.

Movieguide® previously reported:

Many fans were crossing their fingers for an appearance from both actresses in the new installment, but Andrews recently revealed she won’t be taking part in the project.

“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,” the actress said. “It was talked about very shortly after [THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run. In terms of us doing it, I doubt that now.”

It’s also unknown if Hathaway will be returning for the third installment. The Hollywood Reporter stated that the next movie will be a continuation of the series and not a reboot, but the original movies’ star has not yet confirmed if she’ll be in the project.
