Kansas State Basketball Coach Puts ‘Eternity’ Over Winning
By Movieguide® Contributor
Kansas State Men’s Basketball head coach Jerome Tang‘s main goal isn’t winning; it’s glorifying Christ and “pouring” into his team.
“First of all, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” Tang said during a recent post-game press conference. “You know, obviously, when you’re putting something new together and you think you have the answers…you figure out that you don’t.”
“Sometimes, you know losses, struggles can affect your identity. And man, you know, over the Christmas break and last few days, God’s just like re-established to me that my identity is not caught up in winning games and losing games, but in what we’re pouring into these young men that’s lasting for eternity,” he explained.
“And our guys have been resilient,” he continued. “They’ve persevered and kept moving forward and, you know, our staff did a really good job of trying to simplify the game and to help them, and they did a really good job of buying into the scouting report.”

The 2023 season marked Tang’s first year at Kansas State.
Before that, he worked at “Baylor University, where he served as a long-time assistant coach beginning in 2003. Tang’s longevity and success at the Waco, Texas school was largely attributed to his basketball prowess, of course, but also his fitting into the Christian school’s ‘JOY’ culture – an acronym that stands for ‘Jesus, Others, Yourself,’” the Daily Citizen reported.
“My faith is extremely important to me,” Tang told the Daily Citizen. “That’s what I live my life by. I believe that God put me on this earth to be a servant leader, and I just want to be of service in any way I can to serve our players, to serve my staff, to serve our community and our university.”
