Katy Nichole shared the inspiration for her song “By the Grace of God” during her appearance on Candace Cameron Bure’s podcast.
“I’m only here by the grace of God,” Nichole told Bure. “That was kind of the point of me writing this song was that’s a common phrase that we all use. The amount of times that I’ve been like, ‘You know what, the only reason I’m doing this is because [of] the grace of God.’”
“This song was really, truly about a redemptive story,” she continued. “In my life I’ve definitely seen a lot of redemption.”
Nichole recalled when she was so broken inside that she said and did things that hurt those around her.
“Just the time in my life when I didn’t really care if I made it to tomorrow…and that led me to treating people not so kind, and I know that I needed a lot of grace and a lot of mercy from God in those seasons of life,” she explained. “I usually spoke out of lot of insecurity that was in my heart.”
While Nichole has repented, she emphasized that there are still consequences for how she was treating people.
“It’s funny too, because this song is so incredibly upbeat, but if you really pay attention to the words, you’re actually gonna find [the repentance aspect],” Nichole said. “Let me read the part that I’m talking about, it says, ‘I’ve got some scars. Yeah I’ve been through it the consequences of my own doing.’ Which is definitely very true.”
“I’ve definitely had to face the consequences of my actions. And like I said, sometimes I was projecting things onto others,” she noted.
“I became incredibly defensive because I was like, ‘I need to fight back,’ she added. “But fighting back for me sometimes meant I would treat people badly even though they didn’t treat me badly.”
Along with repenting of her actions, Nichole has made amends with those she hurt.
“I’ve been able to apologize to many of those people that I’ve done wrong to,” Nichole said. “And that for me has left not anything unsaid, or any wounds open. I’ve tried to close the the best I could, you know?”
“Sometimes hurt, it’s just like sometimes it sticks around, sometimes it leaves a scar, and it’s hard. But thankfully, the thing I can do on my end is apologize. I can only control my actions, not their reactions,” she added.
