Kel Mitchell Ministers on SNL Set: ‘Christ Is in Me’

By Jessilyn Lancaster, Managing Editor

Actor and comedian Kel Mitchell made a name for himself in Hollywood in the mid 1990s and early 2000s, and is now using that platform to share Jesus whenever the opportunity arises.

Last weekend, that meant he was praying behind the scenes on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE after a sketch with former comedy partner Kenan Thompson and last weekend’s host, Keke Palmer.

“Christ is in me,” Mitchell tells Movieguide®. “Jesus is in my heart. And so wherever I go, He comes along with me, and that’s important to me.

“Right after we got off stage, because we had just finished the show … Kenan was like, ‘Man, let;s go pray real quick.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah man!’ I’m always ready to pray when someone acts is for prayer or says, ‘Let’s pray over this whole thing,’ because we are so humbled that God has brought us this far in this journey in the grace that He has given us all these years,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell is ministering beyond just Hollywood, though. This year, he’s partnered with World Vision’s Christmas Gift Catalog by creating his Hope journal, which is a companion to his book Blessed Mode.

“Artisans handcrafted this beautiful journal in India to go along with the Blessed Mode book,” Mitchell says. “Now you can jot in your journal while reading the devotional Blessed Mode, and it’s so awesome to me.”

Mitchell says Blessed Mode also reminds him to be grateful for Christ in the chaos that often accompanies the Christmas season.

“I always want to make sure I’m not outside of God’s plan,” Mitchell says. “I feel like frustration and anger does that. You know what I mean? But it the holidays do come up and things come up that that do frustrate you. But it’s just remembering in that moment to go, ‘OK, don’t let the anxiety or the stress take me over. Let’s continue to keep our joy, you know, because Christmas is about about Jesus is about Christ. And that’s the joy that we need to remember that we always have.”

Mitchell, who is also a father to four children, uses this season to remind his family about the Gospel and celebrate some special traditions.

“Oh, [it’s] definitely [celebrating] Christ Jesus all the way! then I’m doing that and then also celebrating my family, and celebrating and being grateful for where we are and the breakthroughs that have happened through prayer and us all getting together and just talking and having fun together, as well too,” Mitchell says. “We make fun ornaments here at the house. We have the kids like create their own and we have stuff from years ago and stuff like that. It’s like super fun doing that, and watching all the great movies that we watch, like HOME ALONE and the classics.”
