Kelsey Grammer Says FRASIER Reboot Will Pay Tribute to John Mahoney: ‘His Loss Is and Was Devastating’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actor Kelsey Grammer is remembering his co-star and onscreen father John Mahoney as he reflects on the upcoming FRASIER series.

“Frasier, in his third or fourth act, is not a reboot, but a new show centered around the character in a new set of circumstances and a new city,” Grammer explained. “It is not a reboot.”

The actor shared that the show will “certainly” deal with the loss of Mahoney, who played Marty Crane, Frasier’s father.

“His loss is and was devastating and must be given the proper attention in honor of the extraordinary man he was and the contribution he made to the show and to the acting profession,” Grammar continued. “We will most certainly be honoring him according to his merit. A man of merit he remains to this day.

“John was a kind man, and the world cannot afford to lose a kind man at any time,” the actor concluded.

Mahoney died in 2018 at the age of 77.

Paramount+ has officially green-lit the FRASIER reboot!

The sequel series has been in the works for over a year now, and the streaming service just officially ordered episodes.

The new show will follow Dr. Frasier Crane as he navigates a new phase of his life in a new city. Kelsey Grammer is reprising his role as the lead character, but no other cast members have been confirmed yet.

However, David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves, and Peri Gilpin are rumored to be making appearances as Niles Crane, Daphne, and Roz.

The cast will also feature new characters that Frasier encounters in his new job and life.

Writers Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli are working on the script, which is fitting, considering one of their past hobbies — the pair ran a Twitter account where they made up fictional scenes and lines for a modern-day FRASIER.
