Kevin Sorbo’s LEFT BEHIND Sequel Breaks Box Office Top 10 in Opening Weekend
By Movieguide® Staff
Actor Kevin Sorbo recently starred in and directed the latest adaptation of the best-selling Christian “Left Behind” book series, LEFT BEHIND: RISE OF THE ANTICHRIST.
The faith-based sequel managed to crack the Top 10 movies at the weekend box office with over $2.3M.
While the movie picks up where 2014’s LEFT BEHIND—starring Nicolas Cage—leaves off, there is a completely new cast, friends of Sorbo’s like Neal McDonough and Corbin Benson.
A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
Convincing acting, good camera work and fittingly dark indoor sets provide the right feel for the current dark times the world is facing today. LEFT BEHIND: RISE OF THE ANTICHRIST has a strong pre-millennial Christian worldview. The villains are scary. They espouse an immoral, whatever-it-takes attitude toward power and control. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children because of the debatable theological issues and two violent murder scenes.
According to Box Office Mojo, LEFT BEHIND: RISE OF THE ANTICHRIST was the No. 9 most profitable movie last weekend.
The Fathom Event was released in 1,405 theaters across the country and stayed in theaters for four days.
Movieguide® previously reported on Sorbo’s LEFT BEHIND adaptation:
Christian actor Kevin Sorbo, known for GOD’S NOT DEAD and THE RELIANT, believes that there is a larger audience for Christian movies now more than ever.
“I think more and more people want to see movies with a positive message, not all the negative, angry hatred messages that Hollywood keeps putting out in their movies and TV shows,” Sorbo said.
Sorbo will be set to play pilot Rayford Steele in the upcoming end times sequel LEFT BEHIND: RISE OF THE ANTICHRIST adapted from the bestselling series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins.
Not only is the time perfect for faith-based movies, but the time is appropriate for movies about the rapture and the end times like LEFT BEHIND according to the HERCULES star.
“Because you look at the chaotic world we’re living in right now. It’s almost biblical. It’s almost got a revelation theme going to it in a way. So I found it interesting that it did end up where it’s at right now. And I don’t know, maybe this was meant to happen and come out now but it just seems like the time is right,” he said.
