Kirk Cameron Calls Gratitude ‘A Powerful Weapon to Destroy Evil’
By Movieguide® Contributor
In a recent episode of Kirk Cameron’s “Takeaways,” Christian author Ann Voskamp shares some Biblical insight about gratitude.
“Thanksgiving is about a declaration that God is good no matter what happens,” Voskamp said.
“When we look at Jesus there at the last supper, he takes the bread. I mean, he’s facing the cross. He’s facing the most incomprehensible horror, trauma, and pain—the wrath of all the sin of the world laid upon him. And what does he do? He takes that bread, he breaks it and he gives thanks,” Voskamp shared with Cameron.
Jesus knew he was about to die a painful death on the cross, but he still humbly gave thanks.
“And if Jesus decides out of a multitude, I mean he has the resources of the cosmos at his fingertips, but he decides in the deepest dark that gratitude was the most elemental in destroying evil.” She said emphatically, “I don’t have a better weapon against the dark.”
“Gratitude is a powerful weapon to destroy evil…” Cameron expressed. “That must be why God tells us, ‘Rejoice always, be grateful in all circumstances,’
Cameron and Voskamp realized the purpose behind God’s command and that God’s goodness is displayed in his will.
“Yes…He says in first Thesselonians, ‘give thanks in all circumstances.’ Why? ‘Because this is God’s will for us’… Because he knows that if we can give thanks in everything, we can live through everything,” Voskamp said.

The author previously wrote on her blog, “Gratitude doesn’t say that we blithely ignore all the excruciating things and simply accept the status-quo, but gratitude means that we intentionally notice all the everyday things, and accept God’s grace in all things, with thanks.”
Voskamp authored “One Thousand Gifts,” “The Broken Way,” “WayMaker,” and several other faith-based books.
Movieguide® previously reported that HGTV star Jenny Marrs shared a favorite quote of Voskamp’s from her book, “Unwrapping the Greatest Gift.” The excerpt reads:
God leans to us who are falling in a hurting world, and He catches us. He whispers, ‘I love you. You know how it’s almost like your mother ties her heart to your heart so that she feels what you feel? So it’s almost impossible for her to forget you even for just one second? I want you to remember this down to the very deepest parts of you; it’s absolutely impossible for your Father God to ever forget you, for even just one fraction of a second, because I’ve tied My heart to your heart even closer, and I feel what you feel, and I’ve written your name right here on My hand. No matter how much your earthly mother loves you — more than to the moon and back — your Heavenly Father loves you infinitely more — more than to heaven and on into forever and always’ (Isaiah 49:15).
