Lee Strobel on Understanding the Resurrection of Jesus Christ

By Movieguide® Contributor

Kirk Cameron recently interviewed author Lee Strobel about how Christians should view the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“He is who He claimed to be, the Son of God. It means He’s still alive today which means we can encounter Him and have a relationship with Him. It means that because He was resurrected, we can be resurrected and spend eternity with Him in heaven,” Strobel said.

A common objection back in the 1800s and earlier was that Jesus didn’t die. He just passed out from heat stroke and blood loss, then was placed in a tomb and later revived.

“It’s no longer articulated by skeptics because it just doesn’t make sense. First of all, we have no evidence of anyone ever surviving a full Roman crucifixion. Secondly, even a source as unbiased as the Journal of the American Medical Association, a secular scientific peer-reviewed medical journal, carried an investigation into the death of Jesus,” Strobel quoted. “Clearly the weight of the historical and medical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead even before the wound to his side was inflicted.”

An Atheist scholar, Garrett Ludemann, quotes that, “Jesus’ death as a consequence of crucifixion is indisputable.”

“If you want to put the stake in the heart of Christianity all you have to do is demonstrate that not only Jesus died, but that He stayed there,” said Strobel.

Strobel went on to explain the agonizing death that Jesus went through on the cross through the evidence of crucifixion.

“When you’re hanging on the cross it locks your lungs into the inhaled position so you can’t breathe. The only way you can continue to breathe is to push up. Well now you have a spike through your feet and your bloody back is scraped against the coarse wood of the cross,” Strobel addressed. “You have to push up to relieve the stress so you can exhale then inhale and settle down on the cross. You keep going through that motion until you can’t anymore. … You can’t fake asphyxiation, so Jesus was truly dead in a horrific way.”
