Legendary Crooner Johnny Mathis Steps Away From Performing: ‘Heartfelt Gratitude’

Legendary singer and songwriter Johnny Mathis will step away from performing after over 70 years in the business.

Now 89 and in declining health, Mathis’ team informed fans of the decision.

“As many of you know, Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year. So, it’s with sincere regret that due to Mr. Mathis’ age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts,” an announcement to Facebook reads.

The message continues, “At this time, the 2025 Voice of Romance Tour dates will continue, with the final concert currently scheduled for May 18th, 2025, in Englewood, NJ at the Bergen PAC. Additional updates will be posted as necessary…Johnny Mathis & his entire staff send their heartfelt gratitude to all Mathis Fans worldwide for your continued love & support of his music. It truly has been ‘Wonderful, Wonderful.’”

Fans commented with support for the singer.

“Talent like Johnny Mathis…come far and few between. Seeing him perform on stage is a treat you never forget. I witnessed him in San Antonio, in the 80’s! Impeccable!!!” one user said.

Another person added, “Thank you so, so much for the Mathis Magic, Johnny. Your music has been the backdrop to my life over so many years. I have many happy memories of seeing you live in the UK. I will continue to listen to your music each and every day. Wishing you a long and happy retirement.”

Mathis started his career at a very young age with his first hit single “Rocket 88,” which was released when his was 15 in April 1951.

Since then, Mathis released 79 albums throughout his career. He became known for his Christmas music which often found a home on Billboard charts.

Previously, he shared his love for the holiday season, stating “It’s my favorite time of the year for so many reasons. And I think the one that overshadows all of it is that I come from a large family. At Christmastime, that was the time we saw everybody. Because, all during the year, all of my family, they were all over the place working and trying to make a living. But at Christmastime, we’d all get together. And that’s the time I cherish the most.”

Mathis was born in Texas but raised in San Francisco, California. He has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times during his career.
