By Movieguide® Contributor

Lego plans on expanding its cinematic universe through three newly announced live-action movies being produced through its partnership with Universal.

Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins and Joe Cornish will each direct a movie produced by the Lego group’s Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians. None of the movie’s plots have been revealed.

The creation of these movies continues Lego’s foray into the entertainment industry which began with a new vigor ten years ago with THE LEGO MOVIE. Since then, the company has produced multiple stories that build upon its famous brand.

Earlier this year, Lego produced its most ambitious project yet in a partnership with Pharrell Williams: a Lego animation of the story of his life. The documentary, PIECE BY PIECE, which is still in theaters, has already been nominated for two awards: Best Documentary Feature and Best Music Documentary by the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

PIECE BY PIECE is a unique, captivating experience. The use of LEGO bricks as the medium to tell Pharrell’s story is fun and full of strong emotions. On top of that, the music is phenomenal. which was not only a fun new experience. PIECE BY PIECE a surprising Christian, moral worldview promoting faith and family. It also promotes perseverance, perseverance, teamwork, gratitude, humility, and love. In addition, it tells viewers that God has a plan for your life. However, PIECE BY PIECE is marred by brief foul language, some Romantic and humanist elements, a comment about praying to the universe, and some allusions to drug use.

“Pharrell specifically said that Lego bricks are a great universal tool in which anyone can understand a story because you have many figures which represent people, and of course brick by brick and the system itself, which can be built into anything,” Lego VP, global brand development Alero Akuya told The Hollywood Reporter about the collab. “Using it as a medium to tell his story for him felt like a no-brainer, but it’s something that can resonate with all ages.”

“[Pharrell] just has so many different dimensions of culture, which he taps in to express his ideas, his experiences, his identity, and we felt like that was a really great conduit to kind of help inspire kids and families as well,” Akuya added.

Lego currently has no public timeline for its upcoming movies, though fans can likely expect more updates in the coming months as they begin production.
