Liberty University Student Celebrates NASCAR Win and Praises ‘Power Of God’

Liberty University student William Byron is celebrating after winning his first NASCAR Cup Series race of the season.

“What a day,” Byron wrote in an Instagram caption celebrating the win. “We never stopped working. Crazy racing today at Atlanta. So thankful, winning in Cup is special.”

The college student beat out 20 other racers to take home the cup; the third win of his career, and the first of this season. It also means Byron has a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

Byron, who is an online student at the Christian university, drove a car sponsored by Liberty, and even credits his win to their car.

“I’m proud to represent an institution like Liberty University,” Byron said when asked about his school. “They inspire a lot of people my age to pursue their passions, and I look forward to continuing to represent them on and off the racetrack.”

The student’s faith is a large part of his racing career.

“When I started racing was really the first chance that I really reached out to God and really needed Him in my life. I was always involved in it as a kid, but it didn’t carry as much importance to me as it does now,” Byron told the Billy Graham Evengelistic Association.

He also shared the Bible verse he keeps in mind while racing: Ephesians 3:20, which states, “God’s plan is exceedingly abundantly above anything we could imagine for ourselves.”

“It’s the verse I always keep in mind when I race,” Byron said. “It talks about the power of God and what He can do. That’s more than what we can imagine for ourselves and what we can even think of and believe for ourselves.”

Byron’s next race will take place at Richmond Raceway on April 3.
