Though the first live-action remake of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON has yet to hit theaters, Universal has already greenlit a live-action remake of the second movie in the series.

“We are so excited to give your theaters a big summer title in two years time,” said filmmaker and director Dean DeBlois, who also shared that Universal is aiming for a release date of June 11, 2027.

The second movie will largely follow the storyline of the second animated movie, though there are likely to be some changes to enhance the story. DeBlois previously shared the the first live-action movie will have some key changes from the original because his team had more time to work on the story.

“With the rushed production schedule and the limited resources that we had on that first movie for DreamWorks, there were things that we skipped past that we could have maybe done a little more justice to – some of the characters, some of the depth of the relationships and the immersive action,” DeBlois told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s a reimagining that holds quite faithful to the story and yet finds moments where we could enrich character relationships, give a bit of depth, give a little bit of mythology that might have been lacking in that original.”

Remaining faithful to the original stories is a positive for Christian audiences as the movies promoted a variety of Biblical values, such as being pro-family and promoting mercy and kindness. The first and third movies in the franchise received Teddy Bear awards®, and the second movie also received favorable remarks from Movieguide®. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 is extremely entertaining with beautiful animation and a very well written story. There are some very inspiring moments where a father forgives and fights for his family, as well as themes of bravery, courage and sacrifice, showing what it takes to be a real leader. Hiccup’s father is shown positively, and the undying affection he exhibits toward his wife is refreshing. Caution is advised for younger children, however, because of the action, some scary dragons and brief references to pagan Viking gods.
