Lucy Hale Celebrates Two Years of Sobriety: ‘Greatest Gift’

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS actress Lucy Hale is reflecting on two years of sobriety.

“This continues to be the greatest gift I’ve given myself,” Hale posted on Instagram. “I remain so grateful for another year of growth, growing pains, lessons, joys, and self realizations. To be able to show up as myself and to be greeted with such warmth and acceptance is something I do not take for granted.”

“The interactions, conversations, and moments of vulnerability from people I know, people I used to know, from people I’ve hurt, from people who’ve hurt me, from strangers and even people on the internet have given my life so much color and meaning,” she continued. “Those experiences have been my favorite takeaway from this last year. To every person I have connected with…thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“Lastly, if you are struggling, please know you are not alone and that you do not have to trek this path alone. There is no right or wrong way to heal and it is deeply personal and unique to each of us,” Hale added. “My only advice to remain open hearted, curious, and to find the people who see and support you. It does get better. Take it moment by moment.”

Along with the post, Hale included a screenshot showing that she has been sober for exactly two years, which equates to 24 months, 731 days or 17,523 hours. She also included a quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald about finding the strength to make a change in your life.

“For what it’s worth…it’s never too late, or in my case, too early, to be whoever you want to be,” a portion of the quote reads. “There’s no time limit. Start whenever you want. You can change or stay the same…I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”

Hale first began to open up about her sobriety journey last February when she revealed that she had been working to get sober for over a decade.

“I’ve been working on getting sober since I was 20,” Hale said in Feb. 2023. “I’m 33, it takes time. It took patience with myself.”

“I just held on to that belief that the real Lucy came out when she was drinking,” she told PEOPLE at the time. “It also quieted my mind…my brain just doesn’t shut off and it’s exhausting. I was a textbook binge drinker, blackout, wouldn’t remember what I did or what I said, which is scary.”

Though Hale had tried to stop drinking for many reasons throughout the years, it wasn’t until she decided to do it for her own sake that she could finally give up alcohol.

Actress Lucy Hale is celebrating two years of sobriety, an achievement that she works for every day.

Hale had her first drink at 12 years old, and it quickly became her way of coping with life’s problems.

“I wasn’t always sloppy blacking out – a lot of the time I was – but it was very clear I was drinking to escape something even at a young age,” Hale said.

Even before Hale began her sobriety journey, she realized that she had a problem with alcohol. In her early 20s, she began to desire a better life but wasn’t able to find freedom from the addiction until she was 32.

“I remember shame after every experience drinking because my drinking was never normal,” she said.

“There was always a very strong desire to want to try to stop,” Hale continued. “I was just in this very sad cycle for all of my twenties. I wasn’t ready to give up drinking.”
