MAGNUM P.I. Star Floats Standalone Movie to Tie Up Loose Ends
By Movieguide® Contributor
When asked his thoughts about the show’s ending, MAGNUM P.I. lead Jay Hernandez revealed that he was unsatisfied and has pitched the idea for a movie to finish the storylines.
“I actually floated the idea of a standalone film,” Hernadez said on X in response to a question about the show’s ending. “I suppose it’s still possible. If I’m being totally honest I didn’t love the show ending how it did.”
“To all the #magnum #ohana thank you for always supporting us!” he added, thanking his fans. “Y’all have been AMAZING. We’re humbled by your dedication.”

MAGNUM P.I. was dropped by NBC last June as the actors’ and writers’ strikes forced the network to make early decisions about the future of their shows due to uncertainty about filming windows. The strikes further altered the show’s future when the final season was expedited from Spring 2024 to Fall 2023 to fill airtime left empty from the dual strikes.
The show’s final episode aired on Jan. 3, and while it tied up the major plotlines, a few threads were left unfinished.
“I actually think it’s quite satisfying,” showrunner Eric Guggenheim told TVLine about the show’s end. “I’m really proud of the finale. There are a couple of threads left dangling that would have been picked up in a Season 6, but I didn’t want to end on a cliffhanger. If I’m being honest, I guess I wanted to play it safe. Too many shows have gotten burned with cliffhangers that were left unresolved in the wake of cancellation.”
“Is it how I would choose to end the show? No. But if it has to be the last episode, I think it absolutely works as a [series] finale,” he continued. “So no, there’s no reason to go back and recut or reshoot.”

MAGNUM P.I. is officially coming to an end, and star Zachary Knighton promises fans will be “really excited.”
“Maybe we didn’t know the show was going to end, but we had an inkling, so everybody wrapped it up really nicely,” Knighton, who plays Rick, told TV Insider. “I think the fans are going to be really excited about it.”
Perdita Weeks (Juliet Higgins) echoed her co-star’s statements, saying the show ends in a “very sweet” way for her character and Magnum (Jay Hernandez), and hopes “people will be content with it because it is the end.”
Weeks also called the show’s ending “bittersweet” but added, “I’m really glad that it ended where it did, to be honest.”
