Major Studios Pledge Considerable Donations to Fire Relief

Major studios have committed to donate millions of dollars to fire relief efforts as they look to give back to the communities in the Los Angeles area that have been devastated by the blazes

Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney have both committed $15 million in donations, while Amazon, Comcast and Netflix have pledged $10 million each. Meanwhile, Sony plans to donate $5 million and Paramount Global has committed itself to $1 million.

“For many people we aren’t familiar with it, Los Angeles conjures images of palm trees and red carpets; mansions and movie stars. But for those of us lucky enough to call this city home, Los Angeles is far more than that,” said Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. “It’s a family  made up of extraordinarily talented, hardworking people from all over the world and all walks of life, many whom came here chasing a dream.”

“Today, that dream feels a little further out of reach for thousands of our friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors. But one thing that I have seen over and over again is how Angelenos and Californians come together in times of crisis and how we rebuild,” he continued.

Netflix is directing its funds to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, California Community Fund Wildfire Recovery Fund, World Central Kitchen, Motion Picture and Television Fund, and Entertainment Community Fund.

“Los Angeles has been home of our entertainment business for more than 35 years,” said Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and president Hiroki Totoki in a statement. “We will continue work with our local business leadership to determine how best Sony Group can support relief and recovery efforts in the days ahead. Our thoughts go out to those who are impacted by this devastating situation.”

The fires around LA County have destroyed over 40,000 acres of land and $200 billion worth of property, displaced 88,000 people through evacuations and killed 24 people. The fires continue to rage on, fueled by 100 mph Santa Ana winds, and though they had begun to be contained over the weekend, threaten hundreds of billions more in damages.
