Mark Wahlberg Talks INVINCIBLE Movie With Manning Brothers: ‘An Honor’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning host Monday Night Football’s MANNINGCAST, and the brothers brought on Mark Wahlberg to discuss his connection to the Philadelphia Eagles before their game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Although Wahlberg’s loyalty to the New England Patriots remains intact, one of his acting credits makes him a logical person to weigh in on tonight’s contest. In the 2006 film INVINCIBLE, Wahlberg portrayed Vincent Papale, a real-life figure from Eagles lore. Papale became a local sports legend after managing the unlikely feat of winning a chance to play for the Eagles after impressing coaches at an open tryout in 1976,” Deadline reported.
Peyton asked Walhberg, “You starred in the 2006 movie INVINCIBLE. A 30-year-old part-time bartender who tried out for the Eagles. The producers thought you looked like a professional athlete or a 30-year-old part-time bartender?”
“When I was cast, I was almost 40. For me, it was an honor. I train like an athlete to be able to put on that uniform. It was an honor,” the actor said.
INVINCIBLE earned a -1 content rating from Movieguide®. Part of the review reads:
The plot could use a little work, but there’s much to like in INVINCIBLE. It has a strong moral outlook, with very little foul language. Vince’s father sticks by him, saying, “We don’t let anybody in our family fail.” Vince doesn’t complain. He figures out what needs to be done and does it in spite of pain and suffering. He is a very heroic character. The dialogue in INVINCIBLE is excellent. The football action is some of the best that’s ever been filmed.
Peyton and Wahlberg also joked about Eli’s 18-0 season.
“I was just saying earlier I always liked Eli because we both live in our older brother’s shadow,” Wahlberg said. “That 18-0 season, though, destroyed us. I am still very much a fan of both you guys. The biggest game of the year is next week, Giants versus Patriots. Still hate the Giants because of Eli. You know, ’82 and ’83. It’s going to be a battle.”
ProTalk reported on Wahlberg ahead of his appearance with the Mannings:
“Wahlberg joins the MANNINGCAST ahead of the release of his new movie THE FAMILY PLAN, which comes out on December 15. He’s been nominated for numerous Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Primetime Emmy Awards for his work as an actor and producer, but will likely have much more to talk about with the Mannings outside of his career in movies and television. From his business interests in Flecha Azul tequila and Wahlburgers, to his Boston sports fandom, and his career as a rapper, surely the Manning Brothers and Marky Mark will have a lot to discuss.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Wahlberg:
Actor Mark Wahlberg says a prayer of gratitude every morning because he knows “faith is the most important thing” in life.
“Faith is the most important thing. That’s how I start my day every day,” said the INSTANT FAMILY star in an interview with Caron Butler for Tuff Juice podcast. “By the time I open my eyes, before I turn the light on or do anything, I am kind of saying my prayers. I go in my prayer room and take that 15 or 20 minutes to express how grateful I am,” Wahlberg continued.
… Wahlberg has starred in major Hollywood movies like TRANSFORMERS and LONE SURVIVOR, but posits that he knows God provided him a platform for a reason.
“I know that God didn’t bless me with all this to say, ‘forget about where you came from and just go off and do you and have a great life,’” Wahlberg said. “There is now an opportunity and responsibility to give back and inspire other people to say no matter where you come from or what obstacles you may face, if you actually go and do the right thing…good things will happen for you.”
