MARY POPPINS Star Stuns Audiences on Season 9 Premiere of THE MASKED SINGER
By Movieguide® Staff
Actor Dick Van Dyke recently surprised judges and audiences with an appearance in Season 9 of THE MASKED SINGER at the age of 97.
The Hollywood legend dressed as the “Gnome” character on the show and performed Frank Sinatra’s hit song, “When You’re Smiling.”
“This is the most seasoned and most decorated we’ve had on our show, ladies and gentlemen,” THE MASKED SINGER host Nick Cannon said after Van Dyke’s mask was removed.
“It was really dark in there. …I couldn’t see anything,” Van Dyke said. “I was so positive that nobody would ever guess it was me, that they would have somebody 97 years old on there.”
“I would say it’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever done. But they didn’t put a mask on me. They made a great big like Pumpkinhead thing that I had to do,” he added. “It was a weird experience. I had two little peepholes I can see the audience with. It’s a good thing I’m not claustrophobic.”
The award-winning showman, who is best known for his appearance as Bert and Mr. Dawes in the 1964 MARY POPPINS, capped off his iconic appearance on the show with a rendition of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
Van Dyke also appeared in the 2018 movie, MARY POPPINS RETURNS.
A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
MARY POPPINS RETURNS is a well-made, adorable, enjoyable, fun movie that the whole family will like. It has a strong moral worldview about supporting each other as a family and helping others. Happily, the movie never mentions the use of occult magic. Instead, it encourages children to use their imagination in their daily lives, along with adults remembering their own childhood imagination. MARY POPPINS RETURNS will charm and entertain the entire family.
