MLB All-Star Raises Sons to Commit Baseball Careers to Christ
By Movieguide® Contributor
Seven-time MLB All-Star Matt Holliday encourages his two sons to chase after Jesus while pursuing their dreams of professional baseball.
Holliday’s oldest, Jackson, plays for the Baltimore Orioles. His youngest, Ethan, is a potential first-round draft pick into the MLB. Because of his dad and brother’s success, Ethan faces more pressure to perform and be great.
“Everyone in the country has known about Ethan since he was a freshman when he played with Jackson. Jackson was a senior, and we went to Arizona and played in this big tournament,” Holliday told Sports Spectrum. “Ethan was playing third base, and Jackson was playing shortstop. Scouts obviously were watching the game, and they’re going, ‘Oh my gosh.’ Like, you know, he’s an incredible player as a freshman, and so he’s been on this radar and ranked number one in his class for three or four years.”

Ultimately, Holliday wants Ethan to enjoy the process and trust God.
“And so he not only has a dad that played a long time, but now he has a brother who was a number one pick,” he said. “It’s a different experience because he’s been on the radar a long time, but I think that I just want him to enjoy it and to just enjoy the process. Let’s just enjoy these meetings we have. And you know, you meet with these different teams and get to know these teams.”

“I guess just perspective, maybe a little bit of having done it before, is that God’s got a plan, and you’ll end up where you’re supposed to be,” Holliday added. “And let’s try to have some fun and not put too much pressure on yourself, because, knowing who you are, independent of how you do — he’s really mature in that, and I love that he gets to be part of our pro athlete ministry at such a young age. I think he’s in a really good spot.”
Ethan is currently committed to Oklahoma State, where his grandfather, Tom Holliday, served as head coach and his uncle, Josh Holliday, current holds the position.
