Hollywood legends Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart will star in the upcoming AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY, marking the actors’ return to the franchise.

McKellan previously played Magneto in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST in 2014. Stewart appeared in DOCTOR STRANGE AND THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS in 2022 as Professor Charles Xavier.

Stewart celebrated his return on Instagram, posting a video that first show a chair with Tom Hiddleston’s name on it followed by one with his.

The video was part of a larger announcement made announcing all stars in the film.

DOOMSDAY will also see the return of other MCU legends including Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Doom.

“If we’re going to bring Victor Von Doom to the screen — he is one of the more complex characters in all of comics…this is potentially one of the more entertaining characters in all of fiction,” said Joe Russo when announcing Downey’s role last summer. “If we’re going to do this…then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world.”

Speaking to reporters, Downey said, “I like playing complicated characters.”

Other MCU stars returning for the movie include Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki Laufeyson), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man/Scott Lang), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier) and Letitia Wright (Shuri/Black Panther), among others.

The announcement was made during a livestream, which viewers criticized because of its length.

Fans also hoped to see cast appearances in the video but were sadly disappointed. They did, however, get to see Downey at the end, but this was no surprise as his role had already been announced last year.

Fans are eager to see the return of some of their favorite characters, so directors Joe and Anthony Russo are taking extra precautions to ensure spoilers don’t get out.

“We’re pretty good about shutting that down,” Joe told Collider. Anthony added, “We’ve sort of strategized to hopefully be effective with that.”

Joe continued, “We don’t want people getting photographs, so we are being pretty stringent.”

“The location work we are doing, we have picked those locations with that in mind, as well,” Anthony noted.

AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY is slated for theaters May 1, 2026.
