Meet Hamish, the Nashville Zoo’s Cute New Highland Calf!
By Movieguide® Contributor
Another adorable baby animal is taking the internet by storm!
“Meet Hamish, the newest member of our Historic Farm!” the Nashville Zoo posted to their Instagram. “We received him from a farm in Georgia in January.”
The zoo explained that they’re hoping the Highland calf “will be an ambassador to the diverse types of cattle that have been imported into the United States to improve the traits of cattle herds throughout westernization.”
“As an ambassador animal, Hamish is being socialized and taken on walks through the Zoo to interact with guests,” they continued. “At this time, Hamish’s companions are our herd of goats keeping him company throughout the day. Once Hamish is older, we will introduce him to our other cattle. We hope to grow our herd soon.”
In another post, the Nashville Zoo shared some fun facts about Highland cows, explaining that they “are native to Scotland and are the oldest registered breed of cattle in the world.”
“They’re medium-sized, with cows weighing 900 to 1,300 pounds and bulls weighing 1,500 to 2,000 pounds,” the post continued. “Their flowing locks and long horns make them one of the most recognizable breeds.”

Dr. Heather Schwartz, the director of veterinary services at Nashville Zoo, told GOOD MORNING AMERICA, “He is as fluffy as he looks. He’s brought so much joy. Everybody loves him. I mean, people are coming out even on days like this where it’s 20 degrees [Fahrenheit] and freezing, and we’ve had visitors at the zoo coming to see him.”
Schwartz called Hamish “a little attention seeker,” adding that he loves visiting all of the zoo’s other animals.
“We’re really excited. It’s a great addition to the Nashville Zoo,” Rick Schwartz, the president and CEO of Nashville Zoo, said. “As cold as it is, we’re having a lot of people come out to see him just because of his social media presence.”
Hamish is joining the ranks of some other cute zoo animals that recently went viral, from Thailand’s pygmy hippo Moo Deng, to Australia’s King penguin Pesto.
