Meta Announces Plans for AI-Generated Video Recommendations

By Movieguide® Contributor

Meta recently announced plans for an AI system that will power the platform’s video components.

Head of Facebook Tom Alison shared that Meta’s “technology roadmap that goes to 2026” will involve developing an AI model that will recommend videos and Reels to users.

“We’ve really focused on kind of investing more in making sure that we can scale these models up with the right kind of hardware,” Alison explained. “Instead of just powering Reels, we’re working on a project to power our entire video ecosystem with this single model, and then can we add our Feed recommendation product to also be served by this model.”

He continued, “If we get this right, not only will the recommendations be kind of more engaging and more relevant, but we think the responsiveness of them can improve as well.”

Companies are already thinking about what this new AI algorithm could mean in terms of advertising.

Ben Steele, an AI content developer and social media marketer for The Big Phone Store, told PYMNTS that today, “Advertisers still have to be very specific about how their ads are recommended.”

“Upgrading Meta’s recommendation algorithm could mean that advertisers have to work a lot less hard to figure out for themselves who their target audience is, which would have the benefit of allowing companies with much smaller budgets to achieve the same level of hyper-specific recommendations that larger companies enjoy,” he explained.

In addition to upgrading its video platform, Meta is also fine-tuning its AI chatbot assistant. What would an example of this look like?

“In a use case cited by Alison, a user who was recommended content about Taylor Swift could then utilize the AI-powered Meta Assistant to find out when her next tour date is rather than wait for a commenter to answer the question or to search for the date elsewhere on the web,” CyberNews reported

Movieguide® previously reported on Meta’s efforts in the world of AI, including how to safely and responsibly use the technology:

Meta and IBM launched an advocacy group called AI Alliance to promote the safe and responsible development of AI technology.

“The AI Alliance is focused on fostering open community and enabling developers and researchers to accelerate responsible innovation an AI while ensuring scientific rigor, trust, safety, security, diversity and economic competitiveness,” the group explained.

“By bringing together leading developers, scientists, academic institutions, companies, and other innovators, we will pool resources and knowledge to address safety concerns while providing a platform for sharing and developing solutions that fit the needs of researchers, developers, and adopters around the world,” AI Alliance continued.

The group comprises a large variety of international companies and organizations invested in the field, including Intel, CERN, Sony, The University of Notre Dame and Yale University.
