Michael J. Fox Gets Standing Ovation After Surprise BAFTAs Appearance

Michael J. Fox received a standing ovation after making a surprise appearance at the BAFTAs.

Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, came onstage in a wheelchair but stood at the podium to present the award for Best Film. 

“There’s a reason why they say movies are magic because movies can change your day,” the actor said during his speech. “It can change your outlook. Sometimes it can change your life.”

In addition to presenting, Fox was also at the BAFTAs as a nominee. STILL: A MICHAEL J. FOX MOVIE was nominated for Best Documentary. 

STILL explores Fox’s career in the entertainment industry, as well as how he has navigated life with his Parkinson’s diagnosis. 

“What’s striking about STILL is how celebratory it is,” Time wrote of the documentary. “This isn’t the story of a wonderful actor felled by an illness; it’s the story of a wonderful actor, period.”

Actor Michael J. Fox debuted his new documentary STILL: A MICHAEL J. FOX MOVIE at the Sundance Film Festival.

The documentary offers a glimpse into his personal life, including his struggles with Parkinson’s disease.

“When I look at the film, the thing that screams at me with how lucky I’ve been and how successful my life has been is the stuff with my family. It’s such joy,” Fox said who received a standing ovation after the showing of his movie at the festival.

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when he was 29 and has become an advocate for those living with the disease. 

“I truly live one day at a time,” he told PEOPLE. “I live for each moment and I love each day.”

Fox added, “I’m cautiously optimistic, but mostly optimistic, not so much cautious, as my family would say.”
