Michael Weatherly Calls NCIS Return ‘Truly Amazing’

Michael Weatherly recently made a surprise appearance on NCIS, and some fans are wondering if this could mean a return for his character.
“Being back on #NCIS was truly Amazing,” Weatherly, who played Tony DiNozzo on the popular crime show, posted online. “to @BrianDietzen @CBS & @ncisverse Seeing everyone behind the camera was a box of treasure: one glorious shining jewel was @DanielaRuah who is directing up a storm! #Ducky would have loved all the smiles! Gotta go- there’s work to do!”

Weatherly returned to NCIS for a tribute episode for the late David McCallum, who passed away last year. Movieguide® previously reported:
Beloved actor David McCallum died of natural causes on Monday while surrounded by loved ones at a New York hospital.
“He was the kindest coolest, most patient and loving father,” said his son Peter in a statement on behalf of the family. “He always put family before self. He looked forward to any chance to connect with his grandchildren.”
McCallum is best known for his role as Dr. Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard on CBS’s crime drama NCIS, a character he played for 20 years.
“He was a true renaissance man—he was fascinated by science and culture and would turn those passions into knowledge,” the statement continued. “For example, he was capable of conducting a symphony orchestra and (if needed) could actually perform and autopsy, based on his decades-long studies for his role on NCIS.”
Weatherly left NCIS in 2016, telling The Hollywood Reporter he “was ready for a new challenge.”
The actor has since expressed interest in returning to NCIS as DiNozzo. Earlier this year, Weatherly told a fan on Twitter that “there will be more DiNozzo someday because he is the one character that felt unfinished.”
“That’s my plan! We shall see…” Weatherly continued.

The actor, who played Tony DiNozzo on the show, left NCIS during Season 13. But fans who anxiously awaited his return could be in for a treat.
In a tweet, Weatherly shared a story about a server asking him what’s next.
“I said a podcast and maybe an indie movie, another round of DiNozzo at some point,” the actor shared, before the server clarified that they meant what item on the menu he wanted to try next.
His post added fuel to the fire — some fans have theorized that a throwback post from NCIS star Sean Murray was actually a clue for an upcoming reunion.
