MIGRATION Director Says Movie Emphasizes Rejecting Fear: ‘Need to Challenge Life’

By Movieguide® Contributor

MIGRATION director Benjamin Renner recently sat down with Movieguide® to discuss the movie’s theme of overcoming fear and how he related to the main character.

“The main character, Mack, has this thing about like overcoming fear, and it was really what sort of attracted me to the project,” Renner began. “At first the idea of talking about a character who loves to stay in his comfort zone, in his routine, because it’s so easy to get into that. I have the same issue myself, and I notice that everyone around me tends to have this problem. Fear is something you try to avoid and by staying in a comfort zone and doing the same thing all over again. It’s pleasant. But we all know that we need to evolve. We need to challenge life.”

“That’s what was great with this movie. Just try to talk about this necessity of life that you should not embrace fear, but you should leave fear so you can evolve and challenge life and grow,” Renner continued.

MIGRATION follows the Mallard family as they embark on an adventure.

“The Mallard family is in a bit of a rut,” a synopsis reads. “While dad Mack is content to keep his family safe paddling around their New England pond forever, mom Pam is eager to shake things up and show their kids—teen son Dax and duckling daughter Gwen—the whole wide world. After a migrating duck family alights on their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam persuades Mack to embark on a family trip, via New York City, to tropical Jamaica.”

The synopsis continues, “As the Mallards make their way South for the winter, their well-laid plans quickly go awry. The experience will inspire them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends and accomplish more than they ever thought possible, while teaching them more about each other—and themselves—than they ever imagined.”

A MIGRATION balloon was featured in the 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to build excitement.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have [character from MIRGRATION] Uncle Dan join in on the fun and take flight in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” said Jordan Dabby, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade producer. “I know spectators in New York City and viewers across the country will be delighted to see Uncle Dan fly down the streets of New York City with his sandwich in tow this November.”

Illumination Founder and CEO Chris Meledandri said of the film, “We’re thrilled to introduce Uncle Dan and the entire Mallard family to audiences everywhere this holiday season. The family vacation is such a universal experience of discovery, laughter, misadventure and wonder for families all over the world, so there’s simply no better place for Migration to take flight than at the legendary Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which brings holiday joy to tens of millions of families every year.”

MIGRATION will hit theaters Dec. 22.
