MLB All-Star Matt Holliday Shares Testimony of Faith

Former MLB All-star Matt Holliday recently opened up about his journey to faith and how he initially resisted Jesus before putting Him at the center of his life.

“I didn’t really grow up in church. I didn’t know who God was,” Holiday said on a recent episode of Sport Spectrum’s I ONCE WAS. “I got drafted and I think God had placed a handful of people in my early minor league life who were great examples and sort of took me in under their wing and showed me what following Jesus looked like.”

“I remember thinking, this is appealing. I see purpose in these people. I see something that I want in my life. I felt God calling me, pulling me, wooing me towards him, but I was stubborn,” he continued.

Holliday would resist the Lord’s tugging on his heart until he met his future wife.

“I wanted it to be with Jesus leading our relationship and our life and our family, and that was it. I was in,” he said.

“I still had a lot to learn. I didn’t know the Bible well I didn’t know Jesus well but I knew that’s what I wanted and He was my king and who I wanted to follow so I’ve been a Christian now for over 20 years. I feel like every day I’m learning and I’m maturing and growing.”

Holliday’s journey to faith is a testament to the way the Lord uses the people that He places in our lives to point us toward Himself. It’s amazing how his teammates sowed the seeds that allowed Holiday to later give himself over to God when he realized he wanted Jesus to lead his family.
