Moral, Pro-Family Values Lead SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE to Box Office Success
By Movieguide® Contributor
It’s no secret the new film SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE crushed opening weekend.
Senior Media Analyst at Comscore, Paul Dergarabedian, told Variety, “It’s really rare that sequels increase their box office. Usually, the law of diminishing returns applies.”
Yet again, Variety missed the key element made ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE such a smashing success: Moral, pro-family values. For more than 40 years, Movieguide® has advocated that movies with more moral content do better in the box office than their excessive counterparts.
For ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, those moral values include a strong pro-family theme, a scene of prayer, and the value of every life. At the time of this writing, SPIDER-VERSE has generated more than $120 million at the box office, landing it in the top 10 box office results for the year.
ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE is just the latest movie with biblical themes to sweep the box office in 2023.
As Movieguide® previously reported:
In 2023 the box office numbers are reminiscent of pre-pandemic numbers, thanks in large part to the large amount of family-friendly and moral entertainment coming out in theaters.
According to BoxOffice Mojo data, of the top ten highest-grossing movies in the US, 7 of them contained moral and uplifting content, and patriotic, pro-family themes.
THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE recently surpassed 1.2B at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. It holds the number one spot for domestic box offices earnings, followed closely by GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOLUME 3.
Movieguide®’s Annual Report to the Entertainment Industry, compiled at the beginning of each year, shows studios that by turning away excessive content, they can and will make more money in the box office. Just look at the record-breaking numbers this year to see it.
